EKG Monitoring Flashcards
Medical history form
- First name, middle, last name
- Patient’s gender
- Patient’s age
- Date and time of EKG
- List of all medications and or supplements
Inform patient:
- No pain associated with test
- Empty bladder at least 10 minutes prior to the EKG
- Wear loose clothing
- Rest 30 minute before test
- Takes 5 minutes for actual test
- Position:Supine of semi-fowlers
- Disrobe to waist and provide access to upper arms and lower legs
Attach the RA lead (white)
Right arm with the tab facing upper arm
LA lead (black)
Left arm with the tab facing upper arm
RL lead (green)
Right leg with tab facing upper leg
LL lead (red)
Left leg with tab facing upper leg
V1 lead (red)
To the fourth intercostal space at the right sternal border, tab facing cable yoke
V2 lead (yellow)
To the fourth intercostal space at the left sternal border tab facing cable yoke
V3 lead (green)
Halfway between leads V2 and V4 tab, facing the cable yoke
V4 lead (blue)
To the fifth intercostal space at the left midclavicular line, tab facing the cable yoke
V5 lead (orange)
Horizontal line with V4 at the anterior axillary line, tab facing the cable yoke
V6 lead (purple)
On horizontal line with V3 at the mid axillary line, tab facing the cable yoke
Patients with special considerations
- when right side EKG is performed leads are placed in mirror image to leads placement on left side
- If below elbow amputation, arm leads may be attached to upper arm
- If lower leg amputation leads may be attached to the thigh
- When posterior leads are to be attached: V7 goes to posterior axillary line, V8 goes to midscapular region, and V9 at paraspinal location
