What is ARVL?
age-related vision loss, permanent vision loss cannot be corrected by eyeglasses, medication, or surgery
What are the 3 diagnoses under AVRL?
Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy
What is legal blindness?
Visual acuity less than or equal to 20/200 in better eye when wearing glasses/ contact OR less than 20% visual field is remaining
What are the two types of MD? Which one is more common? What are the symptoms?
Wet AMD, Dry AMD, dry affects 90% cases.
Blurred region in middle (scotoma).
What are the two types of Glaucoma? What are the symptoms? How does it occur?
Open angle vs Close angle, Open angle more common
Damage to optic nerve and peripheral vision. Dark border, bright middle
Excessive pressure in eye due to poor drainage of aqueous humor.
What is Diabetic Retinopathy? What are the symptoms?
Contractile cells in retinal capillaries swell, rupture, dilate, forming microaneurysms
Small dark spots covering over certain part where hemorrhaging occurs
