Cancer Flashcards
What are the two types of cancer cells?
Benign: slow growing, does not recur, localized
Malignant: uncontrolled cell growth, irregular spread.
What are the three types of ways cancer can spread?
Transcoelomic: penetrate peritoneal cavities
Lymphatic: lymph nodes through lymph systems
Hematogenous: through blood vessels.
What is an invasion?
Break through ECM to BM.
What is an intravasation? What is circulation?
Through walls of blood, lymph vessels into vessels itself.
Circulation is through the system to reach destination.
What is dissemination?
Distribution of cancer cell over large area or range.
What is extravasation?
Movement of cells out of the blood vessels into tissue during inflammation or when metastasized.
What is colonization?
Set up aggressive colony invading tissues, forming tumor.
What are the steps of cancer cell spread?
Invasion -> Intravasation -> Circulation -> Dissemination -> Extravasation -> Colonization
What are the stages of cancer?
Stage 1: small, no spread.
Stage 2: localized spread
Stage 3: regional spread
Stage 4: distant spread throughout blood, lymphatics
