Viruses Flashcards
Characteristics:
-size
Small, only seen under microscope
States
Active: symptoms
Dormant: in body, no symptoms (latency) - can stay this way
Why can it only survive and reproduce in a living host?
Because they have no cell “parts”
Shapes (3)
Polyhedral: cubical (circle)
Helical: spiral
Complex: tadpole like
Structure:
Acellular and surrounded by protein coat (capsid) called ?
What’s is function?
Lipid bilayer
Protects virus from hosts nuclease enzyme
What is the core of the cell made out of?
What is the result of this?
DNA/RNA
Not in nuclear membrane therefore causes diseases in plants and hard to cultivate
How does a virus mutate?
- Injects DNA into bacteria
- Multiples into many viruses
- Bacteria cells burst and virus spreads more
Living or non living?
Why?
Not single/multicellular
From Mrs Gren: can only move and reproduce(mutate)
Gets energy from host
