Viruses Flashcards
What are viruses
Viruses are acellular, non-living particles
How do viruses multiply
The transcribe their genetic material (either DNA or RNA) into a host cells DNA
What is the GI of a virus contained in
A capsid
Their is a double structure surrounding the virus. What are the inner and outer structures called
Inner - the matrix
Outer - lipid envelope
What enzyme sits inside the capsid
Reverse transcriptase enzyme
What do the attachment proteins (antigens) do in viruses
The attachment proteins trick host cells to allow them to identify and attach to host cells
What are adenoviruses
Adenovirus are a common cause of sore throats and lung infections in humans
How do adenoviruses harm you
Adenoviruses have fibre projections which stick out and help the virus to attach to the cells lining your throat
What virus causes paralysis
Paralysis is caused by the polio virus
What is the polio virus
The polio virus is a small RNA containing virus with a simple spherical structure
What is the influenza virus
The influenza virus contains 8 RNA molecules surrounded by viral proteins. The outer shell has spikes which are helpful for entry into host cells
