Cells - Prokaryote Cell Structure Flashcards
What organelle protects bacterial cells
The cell capsule
What is the cell capsule
A cell capsule is an area of polysaccharide surrounding the cell which protects pathogenic bacteria against white blood cells as it covers the antigens with sugar
What is the cell wall
The cell wall is composed of polysaccharides and proteins and mentains the overall shape of the cell
What is a bacteria cell wall made of
Murein
What is the plasma membrane
The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer with multiple proteins within the layer that are primarily responsible for the transport of molecules across the membrane
What are the ribosomes
Ribosomes live in the cytoplasm and are have a grainy appearance in an electron microscope. Their purpose is translating genetic messages as messenger RNA (mRNA) into the production of proteins
What are the pili
The pili are hollow, hair like structures that are made of protein that allow bacteria to attach to cells
What is the name of the process at which pili attach to other cells
Horizontal gene transmission
What is circular DNA
Circular DNA possesses the GI of the bacteria process of binary fission
What is the flagella
The flagella is for mobility. It rotates by a motor that sits beneath the cytoplasmic membrane
What is plasmid DNA
Possesses genes that may aid the survival of the bacteria in adverse conditions
