Viruses Flashcards
1
Q
What is a virus?
A
- Viruses invade living cells, genetic material of virus which takes over the biochemistry of host cells.
- Viruses reproduce rapidly and makes them successful pathogens.
2
Q
What is the structure of viruses
A
- Some genetic material surrounded by proteins.
3
Q
What are viruses which attack bacteria called?
A
- bacteriaphages
4
Q
How do viruses damage host cells?
A
- Viruses insert their genetic material into host cell DNA, so the host cell starts to manufacture viruses
5
Q
What are the types of viruses in animals?
A
- HIV/AIDS
- Influenza
6
Q
What are types of viruses in plants?
A
- Tobacco Mosaic virus
7
Q
How does HIV/AIDS spread?
A
- they destroy the immune system. They target T helper cells in the immune system. The virus is passed through the bodily fluids
8
Q
How does influenza spread?
A
- Kills the ciliated epithelial cells in the gas exchange system, leaving the airways open to secondary infection
9
Q
How is TMV transmitted?
A
- can be spread from plants to plants by contaminated tools, clothing or workers hands
10
Q
What type of transmission is HIV/AIDS?
A
- Inoculation
11
Q
What type of transmission is influenza?
A
- inhalation - droplet infection
12
Q
What type of transmission is TMV?
A
- soil contamination/direct transmission
13
Q
What are symptoms of HIV/AIDS?
A
- flu-like symptoms
14
Q
What are symptoms of influenza?
A
- fever, headache, chesty cough
15
Q
What are symptoms of TMV?
A
- stunted growth
- reducing yields of leaves
