- prokaryotes - do not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles
- could be rod shaped or spherical
- Gram positive bacteria (purple)
- Gram negative bacteria (red)

- most bacteria release toxins that poison or damage cells

A
- caused by gram positive bacteria. Once bacterial ring rot infects a field it cannot be used to grow plants for 2 years

- Meninges of the brain which spread into the rest of the body causing speticaemia (blood poisioning) and rapid death
