Virus Reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
Lytic Cyle
A
-Virus attaches to a host cell - attaches to a receptor, which allows it to attach
- virus injects its genetic material inside cells
- some hosts are tricked into recognising the virus
- cell would follow the virus’ instructions to make copies of the virus (make viral proteins)
- cell uses its own resources to make copies of the virus
- this can cause cell membrane to burst/ lyse
2
Q
Lysogenic Cycle
A
- virus attaches to the host cell
- virus injects their genetic material into the cell, but this time the genetic material is kept hidden in the host cell’s genetic material
- when the host cell makes new cells, it replicates its own genetic material and the virus’ genetic material
- daughter cells then make new cells, replicating their genetic material and the virus’ genetic material
And so on
3
Q
How can cells containing the virus’ genetic material become dangerous when changing from a lysogenic Cycle to a lytic cycle?
A
- if a trigger occurs
- this could cause all cells with the virus’ genetic material to assemble viruses and activate
- there’s a variety of triggers in which could cause this: chemical trigger, lack of food etc.
