Stages Of Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
Interphase
A
- chromosomes are extended and not visible
- cell is busy making proteins
- chromosomes replicate
- centrioles replicate
- nuclear envelope is still present
- nucleolus is still visible
2
Q
Prophase
A
- chromosomes condense
- nucleolus disappears
- nuclear envelope begins to break down
- spindle apparatus composed of spindle fibres forms
- centrioles migrate to opposite poles
3
Q
Metaphase
A
- nuclear membrane has broken down
- chromosomes align in the equator of the cell
- each chromosome is attached to a spindle fibre by its centromere
4
Q
Anaphase
A
- centromere of each chromosome splits
- one chromatid from each chromosome moves to centrioles at the poles of the cell
- the chromatids which are now separate, are now called chromosomes
5
Q
Telophase
A
- nuclear membranes reform around each group of newly divided chromosomes
- nucleolus reforms
- spindles disappear
- chromosomes extend, becoming invisible
6
Q
Cytokinesis
A
- not technically part of mitosis
- cell physically splits
- two identical daughter cells
