Virtue Theory- Courage, self indulgence, self control Flashcards
Can we fear some things that harm us?
Yes it is right to eg fear disgrace
Give an example of an irrelevant fear to courage
Fear of the lack of money
How does a courageous person respond to fear
They fear things we all struggle with but faces them as one should
What courage is not:
Facing danger because one is required by law or the threat of punishment
Being calm in the face of danger because character is shown when action is needed spontaneously-ignorant of the danger
Being driven by passion to do dangerous things
What’s the distinction of self indulgence
Between pleasures of the mind and pleasures of the body
What bodily pleasures does self indulgence relate to
Eating, drinking, sex etc
These actions are necessary and pleasurable
Explain a self indulgent person in terms of values
Too pained at missing out pleasures of taste and touch and value such pleasures too highly
Explain self indulgence in terms of desires and whether they have weak will
They don’t have weak will but know their desires and actions age wrong but still act against their choice.
They no longer recognise what is wrong
Self control is the control in the face of…?
Temptation
-has bad desires but resists them
No temptation
- desire pleasure only as one should, such desires will be few and not too strong
Self control-
What is temperance?
Not having the desire to do things
