Virology Flashcards
What is the significance of plaques in regards to viruses?
- presence of bacteriophages, where they are eating bacteria
What are the key features of viruses?
- OBLIGATORY intracellular parasites
- DNA or RNA
- no ribosomes, no ATP (they steal hosts)
- protein coat
What is the different between an enveloped virus and a naked virus? Which one is more dangerous in terms of pathogens?
The enveloped viruses have their nucleic-acid surrounded by a lipid coating layer. The naked viruses just have their nucleic acid and the capsid.
-Naked viruses are harder to kill.
What does tissue tropism refer to?
It refers to the way viruses must have the appropriate surface protein to match the host’s cells receptor.
What is lysogeny?
It is referred to the latent stage of viruses because it is just the DNA replicating in the host cell.
What is lysogenic?
The stage in which the DNA is replicating in the host cell.
What is budding in regards to viral replication?
The replication process in which the virons released in host cells.
Difference between antigentic shift and drift? Which is more concerning in pathology?
- Shift > Complete new reassortment of Genome>outbreaks (concerning)
- Drift > small changes>mutations
What are prions and why do they result in the breakdown of the brain matter?
Prions are denatured proteins ( b: pleated sheet), the enzymes cannot break them down and instead break down the brain matter
What does oncogenic mean?
Cancer causing
