targets parotid glands (1 of the 3 salivary glands)
Saliva or respiratory transmission through inhalation
2
Q
When is person most infectious with Mumps?
A
48 hours. before symptomatic AND has already developed viremia
3
Q
What is common in post-pubescent males that can lead to sterility in Mumps?
A
Orchitis
4
Q
What is vaccine for Mumps?
A
MMR vaccine is a trivalent attenuated vaccine
5
Q
- Hepatitis
A
many variations - all viral -
6
Q
HAV
A
Single stranded (SS) Rna virus without an envelope
- no chronic form
- food borne transmission
7
Q
HBV
A
Double stranded (DS) DNA virus with an envelope
- not found in urine or fecest but found in other body fluids
- many patients clear the virus
- Chronic patients die of liver cancer or cirrhosis
8
Q
HCV
A
SS RNA virus with envelope
- 70-80 days between infection and detectable antibodies in the blood.
- undetectible until chronic - then leads to liver cancer or cirrhosis
- kills more people than AIDS in US
9
Q
HDV
A
SS RNA virus only found in those that already have HBV
- increases mortality rate of HBV patients
- not infectious on its own
10
Q
HEV
A
SS RNA virus with an envelope
- fecal/oral transmission
- does not cause chronic liver disease
