- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Causes cystitis - inflammation of bladder
What are the symptoms of a UTI?
Dysuria and Pyuria ; pain in urine and puss in urine
Main but not only cause of UTI?
E. coli
its also a common nosocomial infection due to catheters.
- Glomerulonephritis
inflammation of the filtering capillaries of the kidney
What does Glomerulonephritis follow?
strep infection
- Vaginitis
usually caused by an opportunistic pathogen that multiply when the normal flora is disturbed
- Gonorrhea
causative; Neisseria gonorrhoeae
can live for hours on fomites
What percent of males and females are asymptomatic with Gonorrhea?
40% males and 80% females
What alters the female environment making them more susceptible to Gonorrhea?
Birth control pills
What does Gonorrhea affect?
pharynx, rectum, eyes, endocarditis, joints, skin
and spreads 9 times faster in women with IUDs
- Syphilis
causative; Treponema pallidum (fastidious organism)
What is the Primary stage of syphilis?
chance at portal entry within one month- bacteria enters blood stream and lymphatic sytem
What is secondary stage of Syphilis?
weeks after primary - lesions appear symptoms disappear in about 3 months
What is the Latent Period?
no symptoms
What is Tertiary stage?
CNS neurosyphilis can cause personality changes, seizures, loss of body functions, loss of speech, sight, or hearing
- Herpes
causative; VIRAL - Herpes Simplex II
latent periods are common
Transmission of Herpes?
sexual contact but can survive warm, moist areas like hot tubs
Is herpes curable?
no but treatments available for signs/symptoms
What makes women more susceptible to Herpes?
Birth control
- Genital warts
causative; Viral - Human papillomavirus
How many strains are there in genital warts?
60+ strains of the virus, some linked to genital warts, some to cancer
