- Giardiasis
caused by flagellated protozoan called Giardia intestinalis
What does the protozoan do in Diardiasis?
attaches to the intestinal wall - causes nausea, weakness, weight loss, abdominal cramps
What is obvious in breath and stool in Giardiasis?
H2S
Where is Giardiasis common?
Campsites, swim areas, drinking in streams (endemic in beavers)
What is Giardiasis treated with?
Metronidazole
- Cryptosporidiosis
caused by Cryptosporidiosis parrum or C hominis
What does Cryptosporidiosis do?
Cholera-like diarrhea for 10-14 days that could be life threatening in compromised patients
What is transmission for Cryptosporidiosis?
Fecal/oral
- Amoebic Dysentery
causative agent Entamoeba histolytica
What does amoebic dysentery cause?
sever diarrhea which will contain RBCs broken down by the organism and may cause abscesses in small intestine
What is Amoebic Dysentery treated with?
Metronidazole
