WEANING MANAGEMENT
a. Ensure early solid feed intake prepare the piglet to sudden change in diet
b. Reduce the amount of feed on the day of weaning to prevent excessive fed intake especially if pigs are healthy & tend to eat more
c. Divide fed allowances over more feeding time
d. Avoid mixing litters to lessen stress
e. Provide medicated drinking water for 3days to prevent diarrhea
f. Provide warm environment
g. Remove and transfer the sow & not the piglets on the day of weaning allow the piglets to remain in the farrowing pen for 3 – 5 days to condition them before they are moved to a new environment

some of the changes taking place during weaning
- Milk production is stopped and protection from antibodies it carries also disappears suddenly
- The intestines of the piglets have to get used to the large amount of solid feed which is now their only diet
- separation from their mother sow itself causes stress
Piglet immunity rises rapidly after colostrum intake & falls at around
2 & ½ to 3 weeks of age
very common & practically the most economically important affliction
