Victimology Flashcards
Victimology
Study of victims which attempts to identify who is most likely to be a victim and why.
Evidence that the CJS is more victim centred
Growing emphasis on restorative justice, policy on how the police must record crime, victim support.
Evaluation of victimology: Negative
Not all victims are treated equally by the CJS e.g. domestic abuse victims. Some victims denied the label victim as they blamed their own victimisation.
Effects of victimisation
Physical and emotional impact, creation of indirect victims, waves of harm, secondary victimisation and fear of victimisation.
Patterns of victimisation

Age - Young people most likely to be victims of DA.
Gender - 90% of DV victims are women.
Ethnicity - Most hate crimes are due to someone’s ethnic background.
