Surveillance - Foucault
Argues the nature of social control has changed from public punishments to the body to more subtle types of punishment.
Evaluation of Foucault: Positive
Bauman and Lyon are postmodernists who agree with Foucault that we are living in an age of ever-present surveillance.
Evaluation of Foucault: Negative
However, now living in a post-panoptical age where the ‘watchers’ themselves are no longer present.
Punishment
Fines, community services, tagging, prison, deprivation of privileges, torture, public humiliation. Retribution - paying back society (restorative justice) deterrence, rehabilitation and incapacitation.
Functionalist views on punishment
Durkheim - Punishment is important, should be visible, increases social solidarity gives people opportunity.
Marxist views on punishment
Critical of CJS, punishment used to maintain social order, corrupt and unfair. RSA - protect ruling class.
Right realists views on punishment
They are for punishing criminals.
Left realists views on punishment
Believe in rehabilitation.
