VFDs Flashcards
VCPR =
Veterinary Client Patient Relationship
What does the AVMA define VCPR as?
Vet assumes responsibility for making medical judgements and determining medical treatment
Client agrees to follow vet’s instructions
What is the general “understanding” of what time frame defines a VCPR?
Visiting a farm every 12 months
Have some idea of what is going on on a farm
T/F: A VFD is a prescription.
False - just a piece of paper that a producer can take to a feed mill
T/F: Ionophores and bacitracins are considered to be medically important and the FDA is passionate about limiting their use.
False - not medically important
What is required prior to use of antibiotics in feed?
VCPR and VFD
What must a VFD include?
Identify premises, species, and production class
Duration of use and approximate number of animals to be fed
(No longer requires specific numbers)
How long can a VFD be written for?
Up to 6 months
A client owns a stocker operation. Every week they take in 10 calves from the livestock market. They want to put them all on CTC. Are you able to write a VFD for them? Do you need a new VFD for every group you bring in weekly?
You can write this VFD
No
However, you will not be able to repeat treatment of a group of animals using the same VFD (there’s really no way to control this though if the farmer has the feed available)
A VFD was initially written for heifers living in group housing from 400lbs to first breeding. A few months later, when those heifers are moved out, can the client re-use that VFD on those same cows?
No. You must write another VFD.
What are the three types of feeds?
A, B, and C
A = Drug only
B, C = Grain product and drug mixed together
T/F: Type B feeds require VFDs to buy.
True
T/F: Type A (drug only) also requires VFD to buy.
False - can buy it without a VFD, but technically you need a VFD to feed it
Confusing :)
What do free choice mineral formulations contain that control intake?
Salts (NaCl)
What is required of a veterinarian if they are going to write an extra label VFD for minor species? (Small ruminants)
- Written diagnosis and recommendations (kept for 2y)
- Write in the special instructions: “this VFD is being issued in accordance with CPG615.115”, species, and withdrawal time
T/F: You do NOT need a new VFD for every treatment period.
False - you do!
Do you need to identify individual animals who will be given medicated feed?
No - just specific groups (Ex. Newly arrived stocker cattle, heifers moved to post-weaning pen, etc)
What does ELDU mean?
Extra-Label Drug Use
Using the drug in a manner other than that on the label (Ex. Different dose, frequency, route of administration)
Requires guidance of a veterinarian and valid VCPR
___________ oversees ELDU
AMDUCA (Animal Medical Drug Use Clarification Act)
Must a veterinarian examine every individual they plan on writing a VFD for?
No
