Define veterinary medicines.
All products or substances that give impression of treating/preventing disease or restore/correct/modify physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological/immunological/metabolic action
What are the 4 categories of veterinary medicines?
- POM-V
- POM-VPS
- NFA-VPS
- AVM-GSL
Describe POM-V
- Prescription only meds
- Can only be prescribed and supplied by a veterinary surgeon or a pharmacist with a written prescription
- Clinical assessment needed
- Prescription required
- Supply requires presence of pharmacist
Describe POM-VPS
- Prescription only meds
- Prescribed and supplied by a veterinary surgeon, a pharmacist or a suitably qualified person with an oral or written prescription
- Prescription required if supplier is not the prescriber
- Supply requires a pharmacist present
Describe NFA-VPS
- A category of medicine for non-food animals
- Supplied by a veterinary surgeon, a pharmacist or a suitably qualified person
- A written prescription is not required
- Supply requires presence of a pharmacist
Describe AVM-GSL
- An authorised veterinary medicine that is available on general sale
- Prescription is not required
- Supply does not require presence of a pharmacist
Describe unauthorised veterinary medicines
- Unlicensed med that does not have a marketing authorisation.
- Is not eligible for exception through the SAES
- Can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon under the Cascade - this includes any human medicine used for animals
- A prescription is needed
Describe exempt medicines under schedule 6 of VMR
- An unlicensed med that does not require MA
- Exemptions for small pet animals (SAES)
- No restrictions on the retail supply within the UK
State the requirements for the veterinary prescription for controlled drugs
- Standardised forms are not required
- Prescription should be retained for 5 years and not submitted to relevant NHS agency
- Supply CD for max of 28 days of treatment unless long term treatment
What are the legal requirements for pharmacists who supply NFA-VPS medicines or prescribe POM-VPS medicines?
- Advice on how to use the product safely
- Advice on any applicable warnings and contraindications on the packaging label
- Be satisfied that the recipient intends to use the medicine correctly and is competent to do so
What is there is no authorised product for a certain illness in animals?
