Describe the supply of POMs.
- Must have a prescription
- Supplied by certain practitioners
- Particular prescribing regulation
How long are prescriptions valid for?
Up to 6 months from the appropriate date
What is meant by owings?
- Pharmacy gives what they have in stock and give patient an owing slip to collect the remainder at a later date
Where should records for private prescriptions for a POM be made?
POM register which should be retained for two years from the date of the last entry in the register.
How are Sch 2 medicines be registered?
A separate register record should be made in the CD register
What is a dental prescription?
Dentists legally can write prescriptions for any POM
What are the legal requirements for labelling dispensed products?
- name of patient
- name of address of the supplying pharmacy
- date of dispensing
- name of the medicine
- directions for use
- precautions relating to the use
What is meant by Pregnancy Prevention Programme (PPP)?
- certain meds with high risk of foetal malformations/ increase risk of spontaneous abortion
- pharmacists need to make sure medicines are not dispensed for females who might be pregnant or considering pregnancy
What is PPV?
Protect females of childbearing potential by minimising risk of pregnancy
What is a biologic?
A medicine made from natural sources e.g. vaccine, blood products, somatic cells, DNA
What is a biosimilar?
A biological medicine similar to an already licensed biological medicine
What is an ATMP?
A biological medicinal product based on genes, tissues or cells which is either:
- a gene therapy medicinal product
- a somatic cell therapy medicinal product
- a tissue engineered product
