What does the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 control?
- Controls ‘dangerous or otherwise harmful drugs’ which are called CDs
- Act is restrictive i.e it seeks to prevent misuse through total prohibition
Why do we have control drugs?
- Some drugs are dangerous and have the potential to cause harm
- Some drugs can be abused
- Drugs with established or emerging patterns of non-medical use
What does the mouse of drugs act 2001 state?
Provides exceptions to the restrictions of the MDA so that CDs can be used in medicine
Describe Schedule 1 drugs
- Contains drugs subject to the stricter controls
- Drugs have little or no medical value but cause social problems through misuse
- Need a license
- Include cannabis, LSD, raw opium and the coca leaf
What are the two cases where exemptions are granted for pharmacists possessing Schedule 1 CDs?
- For the purpose of destruction
- For the purpose of handing it over to the police officer
Describe Schedule 2 (CD POM)
- Contains opiates such as heroine, morphine and methadone and stimulants such as amphetamines
- License needed to import or export
- Can only be supplied if prescription issued by appropriate practitioner
Describe schedule 3 (CD no reg)
- Included a minor stimulant drugs e.g. benzfetamine and other drugs such as buprenorphine
- they are less likely to be misused than schedule 2 CDs and if misused less likely to be harmful
- Do not have to be written in CD register
Describe Schedule 4 CDs
Split into 2 parts:
- Part 1 Cd Benz POM contains benzodiazepines
- Part 2 CD Anab POM contains most of the anabolic , androgenic, steroids and growth hormones
Describe schedule 5 (CD Inv)
- Contains dilute preparations of drugs in Schedule 2
- No restrictions on import, export, possession or administration
- Invoice must be kept for 2 years
To issue a prescription of a Schedule 2 or 3 CD what requirements must be met?
- Must be signed by the person issuing it with his usual signature
- Be dates
- Be written so as indelible
- Except in the case of NHS prescriptions, specify the address of the person issuing it
- Specify the dose to be taken
What are the requirements on a CD prescription?
- Name, form and strength of medication
- Dose, frequency and duration
- Total quantity i.e number of dosage in words and figures
- name and address of person being issued prescription
- Name and address of prescriber must be in the UK
- Date
- Signature
What is meant by a requisitions for CDs?
- A document that must be obtained before a supplier delivers any schedule 2 or 3 CD
What must a requisition have written?
- Signature of recipient
- State recipients name and address
- Recipients profession or occupation
- The total quantity of CD
- The purpose for which it is required
