the veterinary medicines regulations
first introduced in 2005 .
solely for animal medicines .
makes the veterinary medicines directorate (vmd) responsible for the regulations
what is a veterinary medicinal product
in these regulations “veterinary medicinal product “ means
(a) any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for treating or preventing diseases in animals ; or
(b) any substance or combination of substances that may be used in or administered to , animals with a view either to restoring , correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological , immunological or metabolic action , or to making a medical diagnosis
what issues are the VMD responsible for
issuing licences (marketing auth) in the UK
controlling manufacture and distribution of veterinary medicines
establishing the inspection and investigation team (IIT)
what is carried out by the IIT
inspection of veterinary practices and registered agricultural merchants
who is considered a registered qualified person
vets (surgeon registered with the royal college of veterinary surgeons ) , pharmacists ( registered with the pharmaceutical society of Northern Ireland or the general pharmaceutical council in GB) and SQP’s (suitably qualified person registered with AMTRA)
4 main classes of VMP
POM-V = prescription only medicine- veterinarian
POM-VPS= prescription only medicine - veterinarian , pharmacist , SQP
NFA-VPS = non food animal - veterinarian , pharmacist , SQP
AVM-GSL= authorised veterinary medicine - general sales list
veterinary prescriptions
they may be oral or written. the prescription must be written if the supply of the VMP is not made by the person who prescribed it . no person may alter a written prescription unless authorised to do so by the person who signed it . a copy of the written prescription must be retained for 5 years
a written prescription must contain
the name , address and telephone of the prescriber .
the prescribers qualifications.
the name and address of the owner or keeper of the animals
the species and identification of the animal and the number of animals
the premises at which the animals are kept
the date of the prescription
the signature of the prescriber
the name and the amount of product prescribed
the dosage and administration instructions
any necessary warnings
the withdrawal period if relevant
where appropriate , a statement highlighting that the medicine is prescribed under the veterinary cascade
what is the cascade
the cascade allows non-licenced veterinary medicines to be administered to animals.
where can u supply a VMP
a registered pharmacy
premises registered with the RCVS
in the case of POM-VPS or NFA-VPS - premises registered as an agricultural merchant with the vmd
what records must be kept for a vmp
the date
the identity of the product
the batch number
the quantity
the name and address of the supplier or recipient
in the case of a written prescription , the name and address of the person who wrote the prescription
what to do if a adverse reaction is suspected
report to the VMD using the suspected adverse reaction surveillance scheme (SARSS)
