Prescribed by vet + supplied by vet or pharmacist
Need Rx
What is a POM-VPS?
Prescribed + supplied by vet, pharmacist or suitable qualified person
Need oral or written Rx
- If supplier is not the prescriber, need written Rx
Keep record of supply and Rx for 5 years
What is a AVM-GSL?
Authorised vet med available on general sale
Anyone can supply
What is an unauthorised veterinary medicine?
Unlicensed med that don’t have MA + not eligible for exemption through small pet animals
Only prescribed by vet under cascade
What are the legal requirements for a veterinary prescription?
Name, address, telephone number, qualification + signature of prescriber
- If CD 2 + 3, RCVS reg number must be included
Name + address of owner
Identification + species of animal
Address if different from owner
Date
- Valid for 6 months
- CD 2, 3 + 4: valid for 28 days
Name, quantity, dose + admin instructions
- ‘as directed’ NOT acceptable
Warnings + relevant withdrawal period (time btw animal receive med + when it can be used for food)
‘Prescribed under the veterinary cascade’ - human/unlicensed
If repeatable, number of repeats
If cd: ‘the item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian’ + usual CD requirements
Is there a required standardised form for veterinary prescription?
No but must state ‘the item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of the veterinarian’ if CD 2 or 3
When would you state ‘for administration under cascade’?
When supplying a human medicine against a vet prescription
Licensed for another species
Licensed for another clinical condition in same species
What is the time frame for when a repeatable Rx must be FULLY dispensed?
6 months
Can an owner buy an OTC human med for their animal?
No, unless under veterinary cascade
What are the legal requirements when supplying NFA-VPS or prescribing POM-VPS?
Advise how to use product safely
Advise on warnings + CI on packaging/labels
Satisfied that recipient intends to use med correctly
Prescribe or supply minimum quantity required for treatment
What are the labelling requirements when supplying medicines NOT prescribed under the cascade?
not legally required to have dispensary label
RPS: appropriate to generate dispensing label
What records must be kept when supplying POM-V and POM-VPS?
Name of medicine
Date of receipt/supply
Batch no.
Quantity
Name and address of supplier or recipient
If written prescription, record name + address of prescriber and keep copy of prescription
How long is a veterinary prescription kept?
5 years:
- Can keep document OR record in private prescription book OR kept electronically
Cascade
- Vet med licensed for another species or condition
- UK licensed human medicine or EU licensed vet medicine
- Specifically manufactured or extrapolates medicine
