Veterinary Medicinal Product
Any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease in animals.
Veterinary Surgery Act 1966

What does the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons do?
- Statutory regulator
- Maintain a register of vet surgeons eligible to practise in UK under the Vet Surgeons Act 1966
- Sets Education standards
- Regulates professional conduct
Who are the Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority?
An independent regulatory body - professional body for Suitably Qualified Persons (SQP)
What happens when no suitable licensed vet medicine on the market?
Prescribe using the Veterinary cascade. only prescribed by a vet surgeon
Describe the Veterinary Cascade
- Where available legal requirement to: supply a licensed vet med
- Only when above not possible: an existing licensed med for another species or diff condition can be considered
- when above not possible: a licensed human medicine or an EU-licensed vet med can be considered
- only when above is not possible: Extemporaneous or specifically manufactured medicines can be considered.
POM - V
Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian
Supplied by vet or pharmacist with written prescription.
If CD is to be supplied MUST have a declaration by vet stating that it is prescribed for an animal or herd under his/her care.
POM- VPS
Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, Suitably Qualified Person
Prescriber may give oral or written prescription before supplying.
Vet prescription is only required if the supplier is NOT the prescriber.
NFA - VPS
Non-Food Animals - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, Suitably Qualified Person
Written Prescription NOT required.
Good practice to keep written records of what has been received or supplied.
Legal Requirements for supplying NFA-VPS and POM-VPS
- Advise on the safe use of product
- Advise on any warnings or contra-indications
- Be satisfied the person using it is competent to use it and intends to use for authorised use
- Not supply more than the minimum amount needed.
Presence of a Pharmacist relating to POM-V, POM-VPS, NFA-VPS
Pharmacist must be present when handing out medicines. Unless they have given authority in advance to someone who is competent to do so in their absence.

Can supplied by any retailer without any restrictions.
Exempt medicines under the SAES
Exempt medicines under the Small Animal Exemption Scheme
Medicines for the sole use in small non food producing animals such as Cage birds, aquarium animals
Not authorised so not assessed for safety, quality or efficacy
Veterinary Cascade legal requirements
must be prescribed by a vet surgeons
and state “for administration under the cascade”
