Define emergency supply
In an emergency and under certain conditions a pharmacist working in a registered pharmacy can supply POMs to a patient without a prescription if requested by a prescriber or the patient
Two types of emergency supply?

6 Prescribers who can request and ES?
- Doctor
- Dentist
- Supplementary prescriber
- community practitioner nurse prescriber
- Independent prescriber
- EEA or Swiss health professional
What time frame must the prescriber provide a prescription?
72 hours
Can CDs 1, 2 or 3 be supplied or sold as emergency supply?
No. except Phenobarbital which is used in the treatment of epilepsy
Which CDs can be supplied if it is requested by EEA/Swiss prescriber?
Only CD 4 and 5.
Doesnt include the exception of phenobarbital CD3.
When should an entry be made in the POM register?
The same of supply or the next
What must be recorded in the POM register for supply at request of prescriber?
- Date the medicine was sold or supplied
- Name, form, strength, quantity of product
- Name & address of prescriber
- Name & address of patient
- Date on prescription
- Date prescription received
- NHS paid/exemption, fee for private Rx*
- Dosage of medication*
* not legal requirement
What must the pharmacist do for an Emergency supply at Patient’s request
Pharmacist (Responsible Pharmacist) must interview the patient him/herself and be satisfied that:
Immediate need for the POM
Impracticable to obtain a prescription without undue delay
The treatment has previously been prescribed by a UK registered appropriate prescriber for the patient or EEA or Swiss health professional
It is an appropriate dose for that patient in the circumstances
What is the max length of treatment that can be supplied?
30 days except:
Ointments, creams or aerosol – supply smallest pack
Oral contraceptive – give full cycle
Antibiotics in liquid form – supply the smallest quantity to complete the course
Insulin – smallest pack
How about for controlled drugs at patient request?
Only CD 4 and 5. and phenolbarbitone for the treatment of epilepsy.
For the treatment of 5 days.
Where can you find a list of substances that canNOT be supplied to a patient as emergency supply?
In the MEP and Dale and Appleby
What must be recorded in the POM register for supply at request of patient?
- Date the POM was sold or supplied
- Name, form, strength, quantity of product
- Name & address of patient requiring the POM
- The nature of the emergency
- GP name and address*
- Dosage of medication*
- Amount paid or exemption/paid status if receiving a prescription retrospectively*

Emergency supply at Patient’s request – 5 labelling requirements
- date of supply
- name, form, strength, quantity of product
the patient’s name - name and address of the pharmacy
- the words “EMERGENCY SUPPLY”
- the words “Keep out of the reach of children”
