Vet Clin Path 2016 Flashcards

1
Q

Blood smear from 3 dogs. What breed is this associated with? What is the significance?

A

Akita dogs with macrothrombocytopenia. No clinical significance. (A) Large elongated platelet and a normal-sized platelet (arrow). (B) Long linear platelet that is folded in the middle. (C) Long linear platelet and a normal-sized platelet.

A novel form of macrothrombocytopenia in Akita dogs. Vet Clin Pathol 45/1 (2016) 103–105.

Q

Fine-needle aspirate of bile from a dog. Dx?

A

Acute neutrophilic hepatitis (shown in another picture) and biliary protozoa. There are numerous protozoan organisms, which were presumptively identified subsequently by PCR as Hammondia sp.

Sarcocystid organisms found in bile from a dog with acute hepatitis: a case report and review of intestinal and hepatobiliary Sarcocystidae infections in dogs and cats. Vet Clin Pathol 45/1 (2016) 57–65.

Q

Advia 2120 peroxidase dot plots from blood of one horse at (A) 72 hours and (B) 150 hours (6 days). Describe the changes and what the clouds represent.

A

The Advia 2120 classifies neutrophils (red dots) and monocytes (green dots) based on peroxidase staining (x-axis) and cell size (y-axis). There is a large population of neutrophils with reduced myeloperoxidase staining shifted to the left in the dot plot and merging with the monocyte population, and therefore being misclassified as monocytes by the Advia 2120. The Advia 2120 monocyte counts were 48% (A) and 55% (B), while manual monocyte counts on blood smear were 7% (A) and 6% (B).

Time-related changes in equine neutrophils after experimental endotoxemia: myeloperoxidase staining, size, and numbers. Vet Clin Pathol 45/1 (2016) 66–72.

Q

Histologic section of a clitoral adenocarcinoma from a dog. Describe. Dx?

A

Clitoral adenocarcinoma

The mass is densely cellular, well demarcated, and comprised of nests and acini of columnar-shaped neoplastic cells.

What is your diagnosis? Clitoral mass in a dog. Vet Clin Pathol 45/1 (2016) 197–198.
