Vesicular Disease - Luby Flashcards
transmission of FMD transmits via
aerosols (100 km)
animal contact
fomites:
humans
HOw long can cattle be carriers of FMD?
2 years.
FMD etiology
picornavirus
FMD virus is inactivated by
high or low pH
sunlight
high temps
most disinfectants
what is FMD not inactivated by?
pasteurization
Pathophysiology of FMD
pharyu/intestinal mucosa/alveolar epi in udder v–> spread locally –> circulation –> target tissues (cporonary band, mouth, rumen, myocardial, skeletal muscle)–> vesicle formation –> 48 horus later, rupture –> mucosal sloughing and erosion.
Clinical signs of FMD
Salvation fever, depression, anorexia lip smacking nasal discharge lameness **** vesicle formation (0.5cm-10) which rupture at 48 hours
Target tissues of FMD
cporonary band, mouth, rumen, myocardial, skeletal muscle, mammary tissue
Differentials for vesicles
vesicular stomatits bovine papular stomaitis bluetongue rinderpest MCF Severe IBR Bovine herpes mamilitis ingestion of irritant substances
IF you suspect FMD:
immediately call the CFIA (we probly wont have to do the
Do NOT leave the farm or permit anyone to leave
never hesitate calling CFIA about potentials
Bluetongue etiology
arthropod-borne viral disease of domestic and wild ruminants. SPecifically culicoides
Bluetongue replicates hwere
in the insects and arthropods
Transmissino of Bluetongue
placenta
semen
pathophysiology of Bluetongue
infected –> virus hits vascular epithelium –> vasculitis –> edema of mucosal/epithelial surfaces. If exposed before, the disease gts worse
Bluetongue Clinical signs
fever
edema of face lips, muzzle and ears
excessive salivation
oral erosions and so on
petechial
lameness, coronitis, sloughing of hooves.
abortions and birth defect. (important to dx abortions)
