Energy deficiency syndromes Flashcards
What is the main energy drain in cattle?
milking
Definition of Ketosis
syndrome of negative energy balance
Who does the ketosis hit most?
high producing, well-conditioned, higher with more lactation numbers
What is the major glucose precursor in cattle? What are others?
proprionate –> OAA –> glucose. lactate, AA and glycerol
What happens to make ketones?
hypoglycemia –> FFA mobilized –> transport to liver –> then 3 things can happen:
- complete oxidation to Acetyl-Coa and NADH which goes into krebs
- incomplete oxidation happens when there is not enough Priopionate (and OAA) to drive the TCA. some goes to TCA and some to acetoacetyl-COa and then BHBA
- re-esterification to FA
Etiologies and syndromes
Primary - the direct loss of glucose because of demands like calving that cause hypoglycemia and then ketogenesos
Secondary - when there is too much ketones (BHBA or acetone) in silage or nutritional deficiency
What are some nutritional disorders that can cause secondary ketosis
cobalt or phosphorus
