Luby Mastitis Flashcards
How do we test for SCC?
CMT and IDEXX SCC test
How does the CMT work?
It is a detergent reaction.
What is statistically important with CMT?
low Sens and spec, and a high NPV. We just look for a reaction or not, everything else is subjective.
What do we do knowing there is a high NPV?
negative cows are not retested, the positives are retested.
How similar are IDEXX SCC to CMT?
90%, but nothing peer reviewed.
Cost of IDEXX SCC
$1.50
What is the best test to test milk?
Milk Culture.
What is the best way to ship milk culture samples?
freeze on farm then ship on ice. This is because rupturing the cells will
What are the four most common pathogens? that will be easy to ID on milk culture?
Strep, Staph, Bacillus, and E coli
What is an on farm coliform test? How does it work?
3M petrifilms. plastic film on top. Dilute milk 10:1, drop onto film. incubate for 24 hours and look at the selective media. Any cooler, light bulbs, and therm will keep it at 37C
What are statistical data on pertrifilm?
sens .8 and spec .33 (not so high)
What about bulk tank samples?
looking for coliforms (hopefully not from cows because clinical) and monitors the whole herd.
What is a Bulk tank measure?
standard plate count. measuring
Other than Milk cultures and bulk tank samples, what can we do to test?
PCR and In-line Diagnostics
What are the pros and cons of PCR Dxstics?
Pros - same DHI sample and fast turn-around time.
Cons - only 4 (strep aureus, agalact, myco, prototheca), gives false positives (not aseptic), no known bulk tank accuracu
