Vertebral Column Flashcards
How many vertebra are in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal regions?
7,12,5,5,3-4
Where can scapular spine be palpated?
T3
Where can the inferior scapular angle be palpated?
T7
Where does the iliac crest sit in reference to vertebra?
L4
What arteries supply the sacral region?
Iliolumbar and medial and lateral sacral arteries
What supplies the thoracic vertebra?
Posterior intercostal arteries
What supplies the cervical region?
Vertebral and cervical arteries
Kyphosis would occur in what curve?
primary
What is the primary curve?
Present at birth convex posteriorly, seen in thoracic and sacral regions
Where would lordosis occur?
Secondary curve
Describe the secondary curve?
Concave posteriorly, acquired later in life, seen in cervical and lumbar regions
What part of the vertebra attaches the arch to the body?
Pedicles
What is the laminae in the vertebra?
roof of vertebral canal
What is the relationship between cervical vertebra and nerves?
The cervical nerves lie above the vertebra. C1 nerve lies above C1 vertebra.
Describe a typical TV?
Has two costal demifacets on the body, on the superior end to articulate with the head of rib (same #), and inferior to articulate with the head of the inferior rib
What motion does the lumbar vertebra favor?
around the transverse axis (flex and extend)
What plane are lumbar vertebra articular facets in?
saggital
What motion occurs in the thoracic region?
Lateral flexion and extension and rotation
The discs are thickest in what part of the spine?
Cervical and lumbar regions- this increases flexibility
The discs are thinner in what region of the spine?
Thoracic region resulting in reduced flexibility
Differentiate between the annulus fibrosus and the Nucleus pulposus.
The annulus fibrosus is made of fibrocartilage and the nucleus pulposus is avascular
What does the anterior longitudinal ligament do?
Limits extension and reinforces the anterior annuls fibers
What does the posterior longitudinal ligament do?
limits flexion and reinforce the posterior annulus fibers
What does the interspinous ligament do?
Limits flexion
base of one spinous process to the next
What does the ligamentum flavum do?
LImits flexion and extends from lamina to lamina. Forms part of the roof of the vertebral canal
Where is Pars interarticularis?
located between inferior and superior articular facets between he lamina and pedicles of vertebra
