Spinal Cord Flashcards
Where is the cervical enlargement?
C3-T1
Where does the conus medullaris end?
Inferior L1 and Superior L2
What is the filum terminale?
Think filament of meningeal tissue that anchors the spinal cord. It extends from conus medullaris to the coccyx.
How many coccygeal nerves are there?
1
T or F: The Horns are white matter.
False the horns are grey matter and the columns are white matter
What is found in the ventral horns?
cell bodies of alpha motor neurons to skeletal muscle fibers
What is found in the lateral horns?
Only found in thoracic and upper lumbar regions- they have cell bodies of autonomic neurons
What roots and rootlets have associated ganglions?
Dorsal, location of cell bodies of the afferent neurons
Do the ventral rootlets and roots have associated ganglions, why or why not?
No, their cell bodies are located within the spinal cord
What does the white ramus communicans carry?
Pre ganglionic sypmpathetic fibers from lateral horns of the central grey matter
What does the Grey Ramus communicans carry?
Post ganglionic sympathetic fibers from paravertebral ganglia back to spinal cord
What primary rami carries fibers to the hypaxial musculature?
Ventral rami
What rami carries fibers to the epaxial musculature?
Dorsal rami
T or F: Preganglionic fibers are always myelinated?
True
What is the most superficial layer/space in the spinal cord?
Epidural space- dura mater- subdural space- arachnoid-subarachnoid space- pia
