Verb in the Past Flashcards
Verb Rules in the Past?
•Regular verbs add the ED at the end.
•Verbs ending in CVC (Consonant Verb Consonant) we double the last letter (stop/stopp).
•Verbs ending in Y and preceded by a vowel we add ED and ending in Y preceded by a consonant we replace the Y with i and add the ED.
•Irregular verbs have to be memorized.
Questions in the Past?
•We need a particle and it is for all subjects (I/You/she/He/It/We/They/You):
DID
Did she like?
Negative sentences?
•We add the NOT after the DID and we can abbreviate with DIDN’T:
I did not work
I didn’t work.
Past tense of the verb TO BE?
•AM/IS = WAS & ARE = WERE
We say: I was, You/We/They were, He/She/It was.
•Questions, we just reversed the order in the sentence, no need for any particles, like this:
I was: Was I?
We were: Were we?
She was: Was she?
•Negative sentence, we just add the “NOT” in front of the verb:
I was NOT, We were NOT, He was NOT. And we can abbreviate “was not” as “WASN’T” and “were not” as “WEREN’T”.
What about the past tense of the DO verb?
•In the past it becomes “DID”
We would say, “I did my homework.”
In the question, it would look like this: “Did you do your homework?”
Noting that the verb returned to its original form when we used the auxiliary particle “did” to form the question). And in the negative: “I didn’t do my homework.”
