Imperative Flashcards
What I Need?
All I need to do is speak the English verb without the “TO”. That is, if we want to talk about the verb “ir”, we use “TO GO”. In the imperative, it is just “GO”.
Examples:
• Go fast! – Vá rápido!
• Come here. – Venha aqui.
• Fill in the blanks. – Preencha os espaços.
• Listen carefully. – Ouça com atenção.
Can I be polite on that sentence?
To be more polite I can use “PLEASE” both at the end and at the beginning of the sentence.
Examples:
• Give me a hand here, please. – Me dê uma mão aqui, por favor.
• Talk slowly, please. – Fale devagar, por favor.
• Please, do this for me. – Por favor, faça isso por mim.
• Be quiet, please. – Fiquem quietos, por favor.
What about negative sentences?
We use “DO NOT” before the verb. To make it easier, we can use the contracted form of it, the “DON’T”.
Examples:
• Don’t smoke in here, please. – Não fume aqui dentro, por favor.
• Don’t drink and drive. – Não beba e dirija.
• Don’t yell, please. I’ve got a headache. – Não grite, por favor. Eu estou com dor de cabeça.
• Don’t turn off the lights. I’m scared. – Não apague as luzes. Eu estou com medo.
Rule to give more emphasis?
Just put the auxiliary “DO” at the beginning of the sentence.
Examples:
• Do put all the toys in the box. (Coloque todos os brinquedos na caixa)
• Do go now. (Vá agora)
• Do listen me. (Me ouça)
• Do run fast. (Corra rápido)
