What Is The Basic Structure?

A

Afirmação: [Sujeito] + [Am/Is/Are] + [Verbo no gerúndio] + [Complemento]
• Ex.:
1) I am eating lunch. (Estou almoçando.)
2) She is reading a book. (Ela está lendo um livro.)

How To Form Negatives And Questions?
• You will need the auxiliary ‘TO BE’ in the present before the subject:
• Negativa: [Sujeito] + [Am/Is/Are] + [Not] + [Verbo no gerúndio] + [Complemento]
• Pergunta: [Am/Is/Are] + [Sujeito] + [Verbo no gerúndio] + [Complemento]?
Ex.:
1) Negative: They are not playing tennis. (Eles não estão jogando tênis.)
2) Question: Is she studying for the test? (Ela está estudando para a prova?)

How to form the gerund of a verb: base form + ING?

A

1) For most verbs: base verb + “ing” (e.g., play - playing)

2) Verbs ending in “e”: remove the final “e” and add “ing” (e.g., dance - dancing)

3) One-syllable verbs with a vowel preceded by a consonant: double the final consonant and add “ing” (e.g., run - running)

4) One-syllable verbs with a vowel preceded by a consonant and stressed on the last syllable: don’t double the final consonant (e.g., open - opening)
