Ventilation Flashcards
Name the respiratory muscles and their position on the body.
Nostril - Kinda obvious…
Nasal Cavity - In the nose
Pharynx - Behind the nose and mouth
Larynx - located in the upper section of the throat
Right Lung - Ur an idiot if u don’t know
Left Lung - See above^
Inspiration
The process of breathing in, the diaphragm contracts and moves down, allowing the chest cavity to expand and allow air to rush in.
Expiration
The process of breathing out, diaphragm relaxes (pushes up), intercostals relax and the chest cavity returns to normal size allowing air to move out
Tidal Volume
The amount of air inspired and expired in a breath. This is approx 600ml for males per breath and 500ml for females
Increased Ventilation
Means there is increased oxygen supply, which results in an increase in aerobic capacity, and therefore a delay in Lactate Inflection Point
Pulmonary Circuit
Sends blood from the right atrium to lungs to collect oxygen than back to the left atrium
3 Function of the respiratory system
- Gas exchange, where oxygen and CO2 is exchanged, the oxygen is picked up by the capillaries and CO2 is put into the alveoli, which is then breathed out.
- Temperature Regulation
- Voice Box
What is Respiratory Rate?
Respiratory rate is the amount of breaths we take per minute. At rest our average breaths per minute are 12-15 bpm (Breaths Per Minute)
