Venous Drainage Of The Head And Neck Flashcards
Explain venous drainage of the brain and meninges
Supplied by the dural venous sinuses
Describe the venous drainage of the scalp
Synonymous with the arteries of the face and scalp, empty into internal and external jugular veins
Describe venous drainage of the neck
Carried out by the anterior jugular veins
What are the three branches of the jugular vein
- external
- internal
- anterior
What does the external jugular vein supply
Supplies the majority of the external face
What two veins form the external jugular vein
posterior auricular vein and retromandibular vein
What is the function of the posterior auricular vein
Drains the area of the scalp superior and posterior to the outer ear
What is the retromandibular vein
Formed by the maxillary and superficial temporal veins, which drain the face
Where does the posterior auricular vein and the retromandibular vein combine to form the external jugular vein
Combine posterior to the angle of the mandible inferior to the outer ear to form the external jugular vein
Describe the pathway of the external jugular vein
Decends down the neck within the superficial fascia
Runs anteriorly to the Sternocleidomastoid muscle, crossing it in a posterior and inferior direction
Where does the external jugular vein terminate
In the root of the neck the vein passes underneath the clavicle and terminates by draining into the subclavian vein
Describe the anterior jugular veins
- paired veins
- drain anterior aspect of the neck
- communicate via jugular venous arch
- descends down the midline of the neck
What are dural venous sinuses
Spaces between periosteal and meningeal layers of dura mater lined with endothelial cells
They collect venous blood from the brain, ultimately drain into the internal jugular vein
Where does the internal jugular vein begin
Begins in the cranial cavity and is a continuation of the sigmoid sinus
Where does the internal jugular vein exit the skull
The jugular foramen
