Veins Flashcards
1
Q
What are deep veins?
A
- Are veins that run with the same-named arteries.
- They are bound with their arteries by a thin collagen sheath.
2
Q
What are superficial veins?
A
Are veins that run by themselves in the superficial fascia.
3
Q
How else can deep veins be known?
A
Venae comitantes.
4
Q
Why are they called deep veins?
A
- They run beneath the deep fascia.
- The sleeve of collagenous tissue that wraps around all muscles.
5
Q
Name the 3 superficial veins.
A
- Dorsal venous arch,
- Great saphenous vein.
- Small saphenous vein.
6
Q
What are the methods of venous return?
A
- Muscle pumps.
- Valves.
7
Q
Describe muscle pumps as a mechanism of venous return.
A
- When muscles contract they will bulge out + compress.
- This causes veins that run in between them to be emptied out.
- When muscles relax the veins will refill.
8
Q
Describe valves as a mechanism of venous return.
A
- Valves will prevent the backflow of blood within veins.
- They open to let blood through to the direction of the heart.
- The slightly higher blood pressure will close the valves when due to gravity blood attempts to flow backwards.
