Q

Describe muscle pumps as a mechanism of venous return.

A
  • When muscles contract they will bulge out + compress.
  • This causes veins that run in between them to be emptied out.
  • When muscles relax the veins will refill.

Q

Describe valves as a mechanism of venous return.

A
  • Valves will prevent the backflow of blood within veins.
  • They open to let blood through to the direction of the heart.
  • The slightly higher blood pressure will close the valves when due to gravity blood attempts to flow backwards.
