What is the purpose of the pre-trip inspection?
The purpose is to systematically check an apparatus for the safety, operability, and present condition.
What are the Safety Considerations before the pre-trip inspection?
- Level Ground
- Wheels Chocked
- Parking Brake (Anchor-Lock) Released
- Area Clear

ipment do you need for a pre-trip inspection?
- Wheel Chocks
- Tire Gauge
- Creeper
- Safety Goggles
- Hydrometer
- Clean Cloth
- Gloves (optional)
Utilize and Assistant.
How do you check the front of the Vehicle?
Bottom to Top
Approach
Level - if not, may indicate problem with tires, suspension, or load.
Leaks - color and location may help identify what type of fluid is leaking.
Condition - No Obvious damage that would prevent safe operation of vehicle.
How do you check the Bumper?
Unit - Securely mounted and not damaged.
Secondary Damage - If damage is present, check for secondary damage behind the bumper and to the vehicle’s frame.
How do you check the Head and Signal Lights?
- Locate/Identify: Headlights, Signal Lights
- Units: Securely mounted, not missing any nuts or bolts, and not damaged.
- Lens: Check for proper color, cleanliness, cracks, and no condensation.
How do you check the Siren/Horn?
- Locate/Identify: Siren, Horn
- Units: Securely mounted, not missing any nuts or bolts, and not damaged.
How do you check the Windshield?
- Locate/Identify - Window, Seal
- Seal: Pliable and not cracked
- Windshield: Free of intersecting cracks or cracks greater then 2” in length.

How do you check the Wipers?
- Unit: Wiper arms securely mounted and not damaged.
- Blades: Pliable and not gummy.
- Arm tension: When arm is pulled away from window, arm tension should return blade to windshield with blade touching windshield completely.
How do you check the clearance/identification lights?
- Locate/Identify: Clearance, Identification lights.
- Units: Securely mounted, not missing any nuts or bolts, and not damaged.
Clearance lights are the two lights on the front outside corners of the vehicle’s roof. Identification lights are the three lights located in the front/center section of the vehicle’s roof.
How do you check Doors/Hinges?
- Doors: Open and close securely.
- Hinges: Securely mounted and not rusted.
- Windows - Clean, not cracked, and operate smoothly.
How do you check the Mirror and Frame?
- Mirror: Securely mounted, not cracked or damaged and are clean.
- Frame: Securely mounted and not damaged.
How do you check the Battery?
- Locate/Identify: Compartment, Battery, Connections, Cells.
- Compartment: Battery Compartment or box securely mounted.
- Battery: Secure and not damaged or leaking.
- Connections: Battery cables are secure and do not have signs of crimping or fraying and should not have exposed wires or signs of electrical shorting.
- Cells: Sufficient fluid level. Specific gravity must be checked with a hydrometer. 1.260-1.280 (Fully Charged) 1.225-1.259 (75% charged), less than must be charged.
How do you check the front Wheel?
- Rims: Check for signs of cracks or repair Welds on rim. (out of service immediately)
- Tire: Cuts or gouges that expose ply or belt material, and any impeded objects.
- Tread Wear: Evenly worn across top of tire.
- Tread Depth: At least 4/32”.
- Valve Stem and Cap: Securely mounted, not leaking or damaged, and caps in place.
- Inflation
- Lug Nuts: In place and secure. No rust
- Hub Oil Seal
How do you check the side of the Apparatus?
- Locate/Identify: Doors, Running Boards, Running Lights, Ties/Holds
- Doors: Operate properly.
- Running Boards: Securely mounted and not damaged.
- Running Lights: Securely mounted, lenses should be clean, the proper color and not cracked.
- Ties/Holds: Securely mounted
