Vegetative Propagation Flashcards
Rhizomes
These are stem structures which grow underground horizontally from the parent plant. They have nodes which new shoots and roots can develop.
Stolons
Grow above ground. New shoots and roots can develop from nodes, or from the end of the stolon.
Strawberry plant
Suckers
Shoots that grow from sucker plants (undeveloped shoots) present on the shallow rots of a parent plant.
Elm tree
Tubers
Act as a food store for the plant. They are covered in eyes and each eye is able to sprout and form a new plant.
Potato
Bulbs
Underground food stores. New bulbs develop from the original bulb and form new individual plants.
Onion
Split vein cutting
Remove a complete leaf and score the large veins on the lower leaf surface using a scalpel. Put it ontop of growth medium face down.
Root cutting
One straight cut on the root. Other end slanted cut.
What is micropropagation and why is it different
Not natural. It’s artificial.
Is when tissue culture is used to produce lots of clones plants very quickly.
