Respiration Flashcards
What is a coenzyme
A molecule which aids the function of an enzyme by transferring a chemical group from one molecule to another.
Why does glycolysis happen in the cytoplasm of cells
Because glucose cant cross the outer mitochondrial membrane, but pyruvate can.
What is substrate level phosphorylation and when does it occur
In the krebs cycle and it is when a phosphate group is directly transferred from one molecule to another
Chemiosmosis
The electrochemical gradient caused by the protons in the intermembrane space into the matrix via atp synthase. This ATP production of H+ across a membrane.
What is a respiratory substrate
A biological molecule that can be broken down in respiration to release energy as ATP.
Glucose enters in glycolysis
Proteins and lipids enter in the krebs cycle
Who has the highest energy level for a substrate
Lipids contain the most hydrogen atoms per unit of mass to make the most ATP in oxidative phosphorylation.
What is RQ
Respiratory Quotient
CO2 RELEASED/O2 PRODUCED
lipids 0.7
proteins 0.9
carbohydrates 1
Why do plants have a low RQ
The CO2 released in respiration is used in photosynthesis so its not measured
Anabolic and catabolic reactions
anabolic= smaller molecules make larger molecules
catabolic=larger molecules hydrolyise to smaller molecules
