Vascular plants - Gymnosperes Flashcards
What two reproductive structures do gymnosperms produce to protect the sperm?
Gymnosperms protect their sperm through pollen (which carries the sperm to the female cone) and seeds (which protect the fertilized embryo).
A tree produces a seed at the end of the growing season, right before the temperatures get too low for plant growth. Why is producing a seed an advantage in this situation?
Producing a seed at the end of the growing season allows the tree to protect its embryo through dormancy, ensuring the plant can wait out harsh winter conditions and germinate when conditions are favorable for growth in the spring.
What is an advantage for a tree to retain its leaves all year, even in the cold season?
Allows a plant to do photosynthesis whenever conditions are appropiate
