Eukaryotes - Plants Flashcards
What are the roles that pigments play in plants?
- Increase energy absorotion to help with photosythesis
- Attracts pollinators
Why might a plant, such as Monotropa uniflora evolve to not have pigment?
No competition for resources.
In Monotropa uniflora’s case, it relies on a symbiotic relationship with fungi for nutrients rather than photosynthesis. This allows it to thrive in shaded environments and reduces competition for light.
Why might a plant, such as a water lily, evolve to live in an aquatic environment?
To adapt. E.g., access to sunlight, nutrients, and water while avoiding some land-based threats
What are the 2 types of habitats that most plants live in at the same time?
Below ground, above ground
How is the below-ground habitat different from the aboveground habitat?
Below-ground Habitat: moist/wet-varies, dark, support.
Above-ground Habitat: dry, light-varies, no support.
What are the two different functions of the root system?
anchor, absorbs water and nutrients from soil
What are the 3 functions of leaves?
Crucial for photosynthesis, gas exchange (CO₂ and O₂), and water regulation through transpiration
What roles do flowers play in sexual reproduction of plants?
Site of sexual reproduction. E.g., some flowers produce pollen (sperm), some produce ovaries (ovum), some flowers are small and disperse pollen via wind, etc.
