Vascular Intervention Flashcards
What are 3 non invasive methods of imaging the vascular system?
Dupex scanning (ultrasound)
MR angiography
CT angiography
What is a invasive methods of imaging the vascular system?
Catheter angiography
What are the advantages of duplex scanning?
No ionising radiation used
readily available
able to measure velocity and volume
What is the disadvantage of duplex scanning?
The person that takes the scan must be the one to interpret it
What things does a CT angiography assess?
aortic aneurysms
bleeding
peripheral vessels
What are the advantages of a MRI?
non invasive
no ionising radiation
What are the disadvantages of MRI?
limited availibility
Overestimates stenoses
Not suitable for patients with:
Claustrophobia, pacemakers, prostheses, metalwork
What is the gold standard medical imaging technique used to visualize blood vessels?
Contrast angiography
Where is the contrast injected in angiography?
Superficial artery over the radial head of the bone
Allows easy compression to stop bleeding after sheeth is pulled out
What are the complications of accessing a vessel to inject contrast into?
Can cause a haematoma/clot
What is an alternative to contrast to visualise vessels for patients who are at risk of nephrotoxicity?
CO2
What is chemoembolisation?
anti-cancer drugs are injected directly into the blood vessel feeding a cancerous tumor
What is thermal tumour ablation?
destruction of tissue by extreme hyperthermia (elevated tissue temperatures) or hypothermia
