Vascular disease Flashcards
Two types & each with an example
occlusive (e.g. intermittent claudication)
vasospastic (e.g. Raynauds)
How does occlusive peripheral vascular disease occur
occlusion of peripheral arteries caused by atherosclerosis
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is associated with…
increased risk of CV events
Reduce by lifestyle changes e.g. smoking cessation, controlling BP, regulating blood lipids, antiplatelet therapy, diet and exercise etc.
What is intermittent claudication in occlusive peripheral vascular disease
pain affecting calf, and less commonly the thigh and buttock, that is induced by exercise and relieved by rest
Management of Raynaud’s
○ Avoidance of exposure to cold
○ Smoking cessation
○ If lifestyle modifications fail and symptoms are having a significant negative impact, consider trial of nifedipine as prophylaxis
