variety of living organisms Flashcards
Examples of Eukaryotic Organisms
Animals, Plants, Fungi and Protoctists
What are Plants?
Plants are multicellular organisms; their cells contain chloroplasts and are able to carry out photosynthesis; their cells have cellulose cell walls; they store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose. Examples include flowering plants, such as a cereal (for example maize) and a herbaceous legume (for example peas or beans).
What are Animals?
Animals are multicellular organisms; their cells do not contain chloroplasts and are not able to carry out photosynthesis; they have no cell walls; they usually have nervous co-ordination and are able to move from one place to another; they often store carbohydrate as glycogen. Examples include mammals (for example humans) and insects (for example housefly and mosquito).
What is Fungi?
A fungus can be a multicellular or unicellular organism that contains a nucleus and mitochondria, is surrounded by a cell wall but does not contain any chloroplasts or a permanent vacuole. Most fungi feed on dead or decaying material
What are Protoctists?
Protists are a group of microorganisms that have features that belong to animals, plants and fungi . Some are like animals, others more like plants and some, called moulds are closest to fungi. They are all eukaryotic , which means they have a nucleus .
Definition of Eukaryotic
A organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
Examples of Prokaryotic Organisms
Bacteria
Define Prokaryotic
A microscopic single-celled organism which has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles
What is Bacteria?
Bacteria are all single-celled. The cells are all prokaryotic . This means they do not have a nucleus or any other structures which are surrounded by membranes.
Define Pathogen
A bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Examples of Pathogens
Fungi, Bacteria, Protoctists and Viruses
What are Viruses
Viruses are infectious agents made up of genetic material - DNA or RNA - surrounded by a protein coat. A virus can live only inside the cells of its host . Most viruses can only live for a short period of time - from a few minutes to several hours - outside a host cell, though some can live longer..
