Q

Describe cytoplasm

A

The cytoplasm is usually colorless and contains all the cellular organelles. The gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell. It is composed of water, salts, and various organic molecules.

Q

Describe the cell membrane

A

The cell membrane consists of a lipid bilayer that is semipermeable. Cell membranes can contain receptor molecules to provide a selective barrier to molecules.

Describe the cell wall

A

A rigid, external layer that is specifically designed to provide structural support and rigidity.

Q

Function of a nucleus

A

Contains genetic material, including DNA, which controls the cell’s activities (acts as the cell’s brain).

Q

Function of mitochondria

A

It is the place where aerobic respiration occurs, producing energy needed for the cell to survive and function and contains enzymes for cellular respiration.

16
Q

Functions of vacuoles

A

Vacuole helps in storage of salts, minerals, pigments and proteins within the cell. It isolates metabolic waste that might be harmful to the cell. It maintains turgor pressure.

17
Q

Similarities of plants and animal cells

A

Structurally, plant and animal cells are very similar because they are both eukaryotic cells. They both contain membrane-bound organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, cell/plasma membrane and cytoplasm

18
Q

Difference of plants and animal cells

A

The plant contains extra parts which consist of a vacuole, chloroplasts and a rigid cell wall. Animal cells are usually rounder while plant cells are more rectangular.
