Q

How do temperature changes affect enzymes and the shape of the active site?

A

As the temperature increases so does the rate of enzyme activity. An optimum activity is reached at the enzyme’s optimum temperature. A continued increase in temperature results in a sharp decrease in activity as the enzyme’s active site changes shape and the enzyme becomes denatured.

Q

How do pH level changes affect enzymes and the shape of the active site.

A

Changing the pH will affect the charges on the amino acid molecules. Amino acids that attracted each other may no longer be. Again, the shape of the enzyme, along with its active site, will change. Extremes of pH also denature enzymes.
