movement of substances into and out of cells Flashcards
Define diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration . Diffusion occurs in liquids and gases when their particles collide randomly and spread out. It’s a passive process meaning it doesn’t require energy.
Define Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s partially permeable membrane. It’s a passive process meaning it doesn’t require energy.
Define Active Transport
Active Transport is the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, requiring energy.
Name 4 factors that affect diffusion
The concentration gradient, temperature, surface area to volume ratio and distance that particles must travel.
Diffusion is faster when…
There is a larger concentration gradient, higher temperature, large surface area to volume ratio and a shorter distance.
Why is diffusion important?
Diffusion help cells receive raw materials for respiration, remove waste products and plants use of photosynthesis.
Name 5 factors that affect osmosis
Pressure, temperature, concentration gradient, surface area, and water potential
Osmosis is faster when…
Higher temperature, the lower the concentration of the solute and more permeable membrane
