War 1812 is technically a draw but Americans see it as a victory

In 1811 Hamilton’s bank charter is not renewed so there is no central banking system
Low tarrifs cause British to attack the American economy by flooding the market with cheap textiles
1816 Tarrifs are increased and central bank system is renewed

New states are being formed at a rapid pace

1821 Mexico gains independence
Mountain Men - Frontiersmen and trappers in the western frontier
1816 Election
Madison has served his two terms
D. Republican James Monroe elected into office
King is last of Federalist Party
Monroe incorporates Federalists into his cabinet which ends the Federalist party

Lots of Nationalism
Florida - Seminoles
Many of the Florida tribes have died off from disease and war
Lots of southern tribes pushed into Florida
Begin inter-marrying and form one tribe called the Seminole Indians
Spanish have never really settled Florida
Seminoles have free reign and begin raiding american settlements in Georgia
US Govt looks to protect the border
John Quincy Adams is trying to purchase Florida from the Spainsh
Andrew Jackson and his army are sent to protect the border but finds it difficult
Jackson moves into Florida and starts attacking the Seminole villages
Spain protests and considers it an invasion
Jackson gets news of this and attacks the Spanish city of Pensacola
John Q Adams bolsters a deal to buy Florida for 5 million dollars
1819 Adams-Onis treaty is signed
5 million is never actually paid to Spain because of debt Spain owed
Jackson becomes territorial governor of Florida
Missouri Compromise
Population is growing in Missouri
Slavery is re-surging due to invention of cotton gin and the demand for cotton
Debate emerges over slave state or free state
Henry Clay “The Great Compromiser” proposes the Missouri Compromise
-Missouri is a slave state
-Maine is a free state
-Imaginary line drawn west along the southern border of Missouri (Any new states north of this line is free and south will be slave)
Monroe Doctrine
Spanish territories of New Mexico are fighting for independence
Doctrine written by John Q Adams
-US will remain neutral
-If Spanish nationals succeed the US will accept them
-No new European settlements in the Americas
1824 Election
Monroe so popular he wins again in 1820 (follows precedent and does run after second term
Still no true parties so 4 candidates run
-Crawford
-Jackson
-John Q Adams
-Henry Clay
Jackson wins popular and electoral vote but does not get the majority so it moves to congress to vote
Crawford and Clay withdraw
Adams wins vote and appoints Clay to Secretary of State
Jackson supporters call it the “Corrupt Bargain”
Adams Presidency
Jackson supporters make it out to vote against Adams to make his presidency as useless as possible
1828 Election
Jackson and Adams run again
Very bitter/bashing election lots of mud slinging
Jackson’s wife dies from the shame of her old marriage
Jackson wins presidency but is heartbroken from the loss of his wife
